Fairy Tales Twisted Sideways

What would happen if you took the a Fairy Tale and told it from the point of view of a minor character? What would happen if the Prince and Princess DIDN'T live happily ever after? If you love watching Grimm on TV, you might have your own ideas about how to take a fairy tale and give it a hard wrench off in another direction.

These are the kinds of stories we want for our 'Fairy Tales Twisted Sideways' competition. Short Stories (2,000 word maximum, with shorter tales looked on kindly, as long as they meet the conditions) that take a fairy tale and twist it sideways are what are needed. The judge is excited about this competition, and we're excited too!

Adelaide Plains Chapter and Verse has announced its first competition and we're so sure the stories will be fantastic, that we're going to publish the best of them. So, if you live in Australia and you love to write, give our competition a go - the best entries will be published and the writers of those stories will receive a free copy of the anthology, plus writer's of stories judged first, second and third will receive monetary prizes as well.

Entries close on 30 June 2013. If you'd like to know more, you can contact the competition secretary at jeebers@aussiebb.com.au

We have a Facebook page as well, where more information about the competition and our group appears at times.  http://www.facebook.com/groups/320657958040450/

  1. The requests for entry form and guidelines for this competition are beginning to pour in, I'm getting excited at the thought of a deluge of Fairy Tales that have been Twisted Sideways. Send 'em on down!

  2. I thought I would post this as a comment as it is likely that others may have this question;

    Do the stories for the competition have to be based on or inspired by the Grimm's fairy tales, or can we use any sort of myth/fable for our entry? Such as Greek Myths, the Icelandic and Scandinavian sagas, Aesop or all the Chinese and Japanese fairy tales.

    Thank you

  3. That's a great question Cassandra, thanks for asking it.
    The Fairy Story you choose to twist can come from anywhere in the world - there are many thousands of these weird and wonderful stories, as you've indicated. It will be wonderful to have some of them dragged out into the Australian world and shown to us (in a slightly different way)!
    I'm really looking forward to the weird and wonderful tales that are going to arrive in my letter box!

  4. Is there an age limit to submissions?

  5. The guidelines say 18 years and older. I suppose younger people could enter, but they'll have to pay the same amount, and they'll be competing with adults. As the competition secretary, I would accept entries from those under 18, as long as they understand those points I've pointed out here.

  6. I have another question.

    Can we enter graphic narratives - i.e. comic books as well?

    1. Hmm, now that's a very interesting question Cassandra ... I'll have to ask further about that one. I'll report back here once I have the answer for you Cassandra.

    2. I've consulted with the judge Cassandra and the answer is no, graphic narratives are not suitable for this competition. Sorry.
